Deliverable 0.3 (‘Marine Oil Pollution Status') provides for the establishment of an overall statistical basis regarding oil spillage in the area of interest; namely the European waters. Its objectives can be outlined as follows:
- Identification and gathering of spill related data for European waters – data to be collected include spill location, type, volume, polluted area, weather conditions for European seas etc;
- Development of an aggregated statistical approach regarding pollution related factors (including the analysis of environmental parameters) and presentation of the respective results accordingly;
- Application of geographical distribution and risk oriented methodologies;
- Identification of risk areas regarding oil pollution within the European waters;
- Formulation of a common pollution knowledge framework for Europe .
Several sources of information have been tapped, including (but not limited to) ITOPF, EMSA, REMPEC, HELCOM, the Bonn Agreement, SASEMAR, ACOPS/MCA on oil spill data, the EU ‘Eurowaves' project on wave and other environmental data, and a variety of sources on maritime traffic data.
