GREEN CORRIDORS IN EUROPE
Organizer: Laboratory for Maritime Transport, National Technical

Description of the
session: Green corridors are an important concept in
European freight transport logistics and of EU transport policy in
general. They are characterised by a concentration of freight traffic
between major hubs and by relatively long distances of transport. Green
Corridors should in all ways be environmentally friendly, safe and
efficient. Green technologies and a smart utilisation of ICT, where
available, can be used improve related Key Performance Indicators
(KPIs). The purpose of this invited session was to discuss and
debate important issues as regards the concept of green corridors in
Europe and outline prospects for the future.
Moderator: Prof.
Harilaos N. Psaraftis, National Technical University of Athens, Greece,
Project Manager, SuperGreen project.
Invited speakers
(alphabetically):
Fleur Breuillin, European Commission, DG-MOVE
Franco Castagnetti, President, NewOpera Aisbl
Herman de Meester, European Community Shipowner’s Associations

SESSION REPORT: In late
afternoon of April 24, the special session “Green corridors in
Europe” was organized by LMT. In addition to examining the
prospects of the green corridor concept in Europe, the session aimed at
discussing related policy issues. There was a lively and sometimes
heated discussion between the panel of esteemed speakers and the
audience. Participants of the session were also asked to fill out
a questionnaire specifically designed to obtain stakeholder feedback on
the initial policy recommendations suggested by SuperGreen. The
feedback received augmented the one obtained earlier from other sources
and formed the basis on which the final recommendations of the project
are to be decided. Stay tuned for more details.
SuperGreen is a Coordinated Action supported by the European Commission (DG-TREN) in the context of the 7th Framework Programme.
